A feature documentary taking a fresh look at the present-day Russians living in Estonia. The film focuses on personal stories of born in Estonia young people who are the descendants of migrants from the Soviet era, representing almost the third generation. Although they lived their whole life surrounded by Estonian national symbols and colours, lifestyle and cuisine, they still speak Russian as their mother tongue, got secondary education in Russian language, listen and watch Russian radio and television, and gravitate towards Russian culture. They feel belonging to the history of Russia and Russian consciousness. Some of them face an identity crisis: a conflict of national identity with civil identity. But most of Baltic Russians feel an awareness of difference, the recognition of being not fully integrated into the society. A lot of Russian high school graduates leave country to study abroad and never return. At the same time there are also those who feel obsessed with languages and cheated by the politics but love and prefer to live in Estonia.

Jan Uuspõld is a talented actor who is not up to scratch due to his problems with alcohol. He makes up his mind to stop taking clownish roles and accepts a serious part in a play at Vanemuise theatre instead. His journey from Tallinn to Tartu becomes an unusual and in a way exaggerated voyage depicting the life and mentality of contemporary Estonia through various human natures, attitudes and ways of thinking. Next to the fictional characters numerous well-known Estonian public figures participate in the film, either as themselves or as performed by actors or other celebrities. The story of the main character has been inspired by the real events in Jan Uuspõld's life. The black comedy tells the dramatic and sad existential story typical to the Nordic countries.

1895

“1895” is a picture about the life of brothers Auguste and Louis Lumiere. The cartoon acquaints the public with so far unknown biographical facts and events from the life of the two celebrated brothers who have immortalized their names as inventors of cinematography. The picture is an illusion. Is illusion truth? This assertion and the subsequent question gave the authors of this cartoon the rights to declare that namely their version of the life of brothers Lumiere and the birth of cinema was the most original and unique of all.

1944

World War II is decided by the military events in Estonia in 1944. The action branches from the battles of Sinimäge in July to the fall of Sõrve Säre to the Red Army at the end of November. The war is shown through the eyes of both parties, Estonians fighting in the German and Soviet armies. Choices must be made not only for soldiers, but also for their loved ones. The Second World War was also a war of fratricide for Estonians. The innocent feel guilty, the guilty feel nothing.

The film introduces a selection of various guest types in cafes and night clubs in late 1960s when old ladies still had some bourgeois manners from the first republic of Estonia and the youngsters of the Soviet regime were not served in a restaurant if they had no proper clothing. The guests of Tallinn's legendary cafes "Pearl" and "Moscow" were filmed in their own time. The uniqueness of the film is expressed through a strangely independent soundtrack that observes everyday bustle from the heights of melancholy poetry and remote uranography. Artur Alliksaar's poetry is read by Aarne Üksküla.

Behind one door, however, a lonely woman awaits him, who pulls him into weird role plays the polite youngster cannot say “no” to.

Harassment, mental violence, manipulation, cornering – these topics are current in both politics as well as private sphere. In these nightmarish confrontations, dramatics, mysticism as well as twisted comedy can be found. The second short film is "Early Spring". This is not a cool youth movie about frolicking teenagers. It's a sociopsychological challenge to incite a discussion about group dynamics, conformism, and social roles that are largely shaped and confirmed in teenage years. Hopefully there is a moment of self-reflection here for everyone who has witnessed the blind acceptance of the group leader's whims, even when they clash with the observer's principles and conscience. Later it is almost impossible to analyse what happened, and why. Sander is not the only victim here. You could even speak about Alo in those terms, not to mention Laura. In another world, Sander and Laura might have been a young couple in love, but it is impossible in given social structure.

A Fragile World

The film depicts two different worlds - man made and natural - opposites both in terms of content and form. One of the most striking features of Estonian nature are its bog landscapes. Bogs act as a kind of filter by absorbing exhaust gas and cleaning the air for people to breathe. Bogs are also good at safeguarding groundwater. Still, it is not all blue skies ahead for these natural landscapes. The film depicts two different worlds, opposites both in terms of content and form. Products of evolution, the irregular natural landscapes together with their inhabitants stand in opposition to manmade regularity, perfectly straight mining fields.

Mati doesn't want to live anymore after the loss of his wife. She was everything to him and he thinks that life has no point without her. He has a job in a library and there is Ruth, who has secretly loved him for years. Life of her daughter Mari is a mess and she would need a help herself. Mati just wants to get away. Then out of nowhere shows up a restless Sass, a friend of all the troubled people. Sass starts to teach Mati how to live. Mati has now a friend, of whom it's almost impossible to get rid of. A Friend of Mine is a warm drama-comedy about the deep loneliness, which can only be cured by friendship.

The task – to watch and review every Estonian theatre production of 2018. From 450 job applicants 21-year-old small town girl Alissija is hired. Coming from the periphery and a Russian-speaking family, she knows nothing about performing arts, actors, nor has ever been to any of the theatre houses. To make the job logistically possible, she has to move to the capital of Tallinn. Months pass and there are shows that inspire and many more that bring despair. As her view of the world starts to expand, Alissija has to face traumas of the past to redefine herself and a future worth surviving for. Putting the main character through 224 shows in 365 days, this film serves as a true coming of age story, testing the human limit of consuming culture and asking whether art has the power to change a life.

For security reasons, five counterparts will be found and trained for Lenin; all of them are finally sent to Russia for participating in the revolution. How will the real Lenin put up with all this? How will the surrounding women and fellow fighters react? These are the questions clever Kesküla is asking - and the answers will be born even before those involved start thinking of the matter.

One of the leaders, Anton Sommer is an intelligent Communist and a man of principle who is arrested and sent to military court. Authorities try to make Sommer plead guilty and admit the revolutionaries' loss, but for Sommer honour is more important that life. His fellow fighter Ester pays back for him. The gently stylised and indifferent world of “Autumn Ball” is steadily advancing towards winter and will not give any answers to these questions. What this world can demonstrate though is the possibility for laughter even there, where hope has long since become a sparse commodity. „Autumn Ball” is not exactly a comedy but it will not hurt you to go and see it anyway.

Better Tomorrow

Six years after Finland opens up it's job market to new EU member states, a considerable number of Estonians have left their poorly paid jobs in Estonia in search of a better tomorrow in Finland. A bag that's always packed, a bed in an anonymous room, a kitchen that's used by countless people – these are lives on permanent standby. This is a story of a house near Helsinki, where ten Estonians live on the ground floor and Tomi, their employer, a Finn and a true Estophile, on the second. Tomi wonders why the Estonians don't do much with the free time on their hands or soak up the local culture, the Estonians however have a whole set of other concerns.

Vello makes a living from beekeeping and hunting, his life flows in the rhythm of nature.

Former Olympic athlete and female wrestler Epp Mäe's coach Arvi Aavik starts forming the first Estonian female national team where the athletes and coaches are working according to his training plan. Bloody John is reduced to a weak-willed, henpecked subordinate of the female robber. The desperate John escapes and seeks shelter in his dear childhood home in Saaremaa, where he starts earning a living again by honest means.

When two strangers’ paths cross after a car accident, the woman hijacks the situation and gets into the man’s car, demanding that he take her away from the scene. As the man tries to find a way out of the situation, fragments from the woman’s past start painting a picture of the tragic events that happened to her.

Sven Grünberg is a composer, musician, Buddhist thinker, the “importer” of Dalai Lama, the father - to name some role in his life. Of course, he is also a son, a husband, a brother, teacher, man. He is a personality with well-established world view. Despite contact with Buddhism, he is a man with strict expression, who is always ready to take a responsibility for what he said. A few years ago Grünberg suffered complicated heart surgery and began to look on life differently. "Bonus Track" portrays post-surgery Sven Grünberg, while he continues to create new music, takes care that his earlier works be arranged, raising preschool daughter and organizing for the third time the visit of His Holiness the XIV Dalai Lama in to Estonia.

The heroes of the film are three bear cubs from the cult painting by Ivan Shishkin “Morning in a Pine Forest”. Have lost their painter mom the three brothers Henry, Vincent and August happen to appear in Paris, in the city of every creator. All attempts to earn their living as artist fail. Their impressionistic “collies” won’t be acknowledged. Under cover as circus lions the bear cubs travel back to Russia to find the heritage of their mom.

Bumpy is a family musical which somewhat echoes the fairy tale of Hansel and Gretel. A brother and sister called Kusti and Iti get lost in a forest while picking strawberries and are captured by an evil forest hag, who uses the two kids as slave labor - Kusti is put to work around the farm, while Iti looks after the hag's mischievous son, whom she names Bumpy due to the horn-like bumps on his head. When a chance to escape arises, the two kids take Bumpy with them. But how will a wild forest rascal like Bumpy adjust to life with Iti and Kusti's family?

Captain Morten and the Spider Queen

A young boy learns to take control over his life when he is shrunk to the size of an insect and has to sail his own toy boat through a flooded café. Morten has to be shrunk down before he can grow up. Morten builds a toy boat which he crews with insects. This is his escape from the unhappy world of the harbour café where he lives with his aunt Anna. When he is shrunk in a botched magic trick he finds himself sailing his own boat across the flooded café. The insect crew look uncannily like his aunt and the people she orders around. Morten has to reassess his relationships, save the crew from shipwreck and take control of his life.

Elusive Landscapes

The main characters in the documentary film "Elusive Landscapes" include Pille, Felix, Father Agaton, Hellat and Kateriina, who all live in Western Estonia. Pille, whose last surviving close relative is her daughter living in Finland, attempts to farm sheep alone while defying old age. Felix is worried about bees. Beehives remain empty, bee colonies are dying out, queens are not laying enough eggs for the new generations to hatch. Fields are being poisoned and primeval forests are being clear-cut. Father Agaton serves small local Estonian Apostolic Orthodox Church congregations, performs blessings, and administers Communion. The Estonian Defense League member Hellat and his daughter Kateriina look for silver, which is supposedly buried in the ground. Legend has it that Vikings reached the local seaside villages through a place called Neidsaare, through the reed turfs of the shallow bay.

Estonian Defence

In 1993, Estonian National Defence celebrates its 75th birthday. Soviet military forces have not left yet when the restoration of national defence has been founded. Various state and voluntary structures are looking for the right answers in forming defence policy. The director is intrigued by the national level of protection and the politicians' rights to decide for or instead of the nation how to protect the state (and nation). These problems have always been vital for Estonia. The prequel of the documentary introduces a long excursion to history - from the War of Independence to the year of 1940, while observing the development of Estonian national defence and its collapse.

Estonian Nature: Alam-Pedja

Alam-Pedja is one of the largest nature reserves in Estonia, where there are wide valleys on the banks of flowing rivers, rare floodplain forests and swamps between the rivers. The nature there runs in a primeval rhythm, as it has been doing for the past millennia, and the human influence in this primeval nature is just as much as is needed to preserve the large communities created with the help of man - flood plains. However, the second largest city in Estonia is located nearby, from where more and more people move by boat along the rivers to Alam-Pedja, and the area is also surrounded by large highways where the flow of cars never stops. The face of Alam-Pedja is something primal and untouched, which reminds us of where we came from.

Estonian Rhapsody

A film about the Estonians’ favorite folk band Kukerpillid, which after half a century of activity undertakes to update its repertoire with pieces by contemporary composers. Maybe this will bring into being new folk songs, which years later everyone will know by heart again. The band's spirited journey through the summer concert venues of Estonia, with interludes to its roots, would allow us to expect this.

Eternal Hunting Grounds

Two children play on an island, in an open coastal landscape. The beauty of nature lies in their eyes, from the smallest spider to the biggest mountains. Everything is of equal importance to them. They have a game they love to play; to search under stones, on the beach, in the mud and in the fields. They are looking for dead animals. Once they have collected enough animals, they take them to a self-made graveyard. Here, the children bury the animals, decorate the graves, sing songs, and recite poems. The ritual surrounding the burial involves not just the children. The vegetation, the sea and the birds all take part in the ceremony. The dead animals come alive again – they rise in the “Eternal hunting grounds.” The children’s imagination stretches as far as the horizon, they visualize how it is there. This vision is like a beautiful treasure inside of them. They love this game – it is both important and exciting. The hunter also lives on the island. He has killed the animals that the children find. The hunter kills because he is hungry, or just because he likes to do it. He sometimes lets his victims lie to decay in open air. The children collect them and turn the hunter’s cruel actions into something good.
 One day the hunter shoots a heron. This bird is bigger and more beautiful than any other animal the children have found. This animated short film takes on the topic of children and nature, innocence, and truth. What lies in between?

Gentle Warriors

Documentary by Marija Stonytė takes us on the journey of a girl becoming a warrior in the military and in her own life. A few years ago military conscription for men was reintroduced in Lithuania. Simultaneously, there were a number of young women who decided to voluntarily register for military service. We follow 3 of these girls for 9 months as they live and train among 600 men at an isolated military base. Three girls – three totally unique characters, come from very different social backgrounds. One joined the army with the aim of starting a new life, another - to find love, the third - to prove herself strong and able to defend her country from the possible threat of Russian aggression. Their romantic visions of being a soldier are soon altered as they begin their service and their expectations are challenged by harsh reality.

The life of Georg Ots (1920-1975), the most well-known Estonian opera singer, was full of changes and difficulties. He started with the career of an engineer; later during the times of war he found himself as a musician in Yaroslavl. Georg Ots's extraordinary talent and dedication made him a nationwide star in the whole Soviet Union; however, there are two sides of every coin. It is a very personal story about love and marriage, celebrity and jealousy, self-realization and self-destruction.

Story about the silent Boy who is sent for medical treatment to Jakub, a former colonial missionary living on an island that is also a military training area. Jakub is the only civilian there. He has to make observations during the bombing at night and phone the headquarters about the results. The observation spot is located in the tower of a church in ruins where Jakub makes silage. The missionary - an old horse - tramples silage in the church tower. There are beehives inside of the church. Jakub plays the organ, singing chorals and the Boy pumps the organ bellows by foot. Their home is inside of an old airplane hangar where Jakub translates "Georgica" by Vergilius from Latin into Swahili in order to be able to take the book to Africa some day. "And then joy will come.. And peace.... And wealth will come as well...".

Ghost Mountaineer

An Estonian student hiking group get caught up in a series of scary events unfolding in wintry Siberia. The unpopular group leader Olle, becomes disappointed in his companions during the trip and disappears on the last day in the mountains. His rival, liberal-minded and adventurous Eero guides the descending hikers into a Buryate village on the mountain to seek help. A weird and insane chain of events is unleashed which seems to be orchestrated by the missing Olle. In a foreign land and among people they do not know, the hikers are faced with a task which they at first do not want to undertake and later are unable to tackle.

In Bed With A Writer

The film's protagonist Peeter is a known and recognised writer in his home country. He has published 25 books. He has received eight national awards. The people have nicknamed him the Filth Writer. Peeter does not care about recognition, he drinks, parties, and often makes statements, which upset people. As a rule, Peeter writes about his bawdy life and unhappy relationships with women. After divorce, Peeter hasn't written in over a year. No woman, no fights, nothing to write about. Peeter's favourite writer and role model Bukowsky did not write for seven years. In his depression, Peeter comes up with the hare-brained idea of trying different roles: he learns striptease, offers to model for a racist photographer, dabs in masochism, tries to get in bed with artists and writers, sleeps on his parents' graves - basically, tests the limits with all sorts of imbecilities in order to escape the numbness. The result is a unique absurdity walking the line between dark humour and tragedy, occasionally crossing it.

Jüri, a servant to a nobleman, faces punishment for pilfering food behind the baron’s back to aid his ailing father. Swearing vengeance, he flees the manor astride a stolen horse, deftly evading pursuers time and again by assuming various disguises. His romance with Madli, another servant at the manor, imbues the tale with intrigue, ultimately sealing the fate of the cunning fugitive. “Jüri Rumm” unfolds as a satirical adventure film chronicling the exploits of a legendary Estonian thief during the latter half of the 19th century, who ascended to the status of a folk hero akin to a local Robin Hood – redistributing wealth from the affluent to the impoverished. In the early 20th century, his vibrant persona sparked a series of stage productions and literary works. Primarily drawn from Hans Varessoo’s (pseudonym) 1908 novel and the first volume (1921) of Jaan Metua’s trilogy of plays, the screenplay of the film is attributed to Mikhail Lepper. Lepper, the first Estonian to study under Georg Wilhelm Pabst and work with Fritz Lang in the early 1920s, later emigrated to Sweden and pursued a career in photojournalism. “Jüri Rumm” was digitised in 6K and restored in 4K at the Film Archive of the National Archives of Estonia in 2023, using the original nitrate negative, three surviving reels of a nitrate release print and a reel of a later-generation safety print. Regrettably, the fourth reel remains lost. Initially released as a silent feature with live accompaniment in December 1929, “Jüri Rumm” made its debut in two installments. The first part ran for seven days, starting from 11 December at Grand-Marina and Rekord cinemas in Tallinn, followed by the second part, which was shown for six days starting from 18 December. For the subsequent distribution in Tallinn and elsewhere, the two parts were edited together. The music accompanying this presentation of “Jüri Rumm” was composed and performed by Stephen Horne (UK, piano) and Frank Bockius (Germany, percussion) in 2023. Horne and Bockius are internationally acclaimed silent film musicians who regularly perform at film heritage festivals around the world. The production and recording of the soundtrack was supported by Estonian Cultural Endowment.

In the game spurred by debilitating boredom where money is of no importance yet download speeds and apps are useless, the old fisherman becomes almost a final boss for the youth moment level. It is a meeting of smartness and values of the two generations where contradictory ideals shine out.

As a result of the initiative of the youth programme of Estonian Television, a phenomenon such as "Hometown" was born in Estonia in October 1975. "Kraft paper" (originally titled "Jõupaber") is a cartoon made in coal-drawing technique. This is, above all, a story about the responsibility our heads of state have to nature. Money and power will make a person so greedy, until they don’t realize the damage it has done to nature. The film examines Estonian forest policy and sees it through the eyes of environmental activists. Estonians, as a forest nation, mourn the loss of their woods while trying to protect what’s still remaining. Politicians, on the other hand, shrug their shoulders and deal only in profit sharing. All that matters to them is economic prosperity and their own wallet, in the name of which they agree to harm the Estonian environment. Will the activists still be able to save the situation by reaching the back rooms of the government?

Labyrinth

This experimental film, hand-scraped and painted on the film strip, is a unique and expressive vision of a sick society, expressed by the unnatural existence in a labyrinth. The subconsciousness reflects the attack of bureaucrats on the world of the creative and natural Woodpeckerman, on his surroundings and his universe – a bird cage. In the end the image of the human existence is presented in the form of a reversed pyramid.

Landscape patterns

The nature documentary filmmakers move through all four seasons and four basic landscape types in Estonia: the swamp, the forest, the coast and the wooded meadow. Everything that appears in front of the camera lens, including people, will become a part of the landscape pattern. People have habitated Estonian territory for more than 10 thousand years. Withdrawal of the ice cap created a habitat that has been adjusted to human needs during thousands of years. Lots of fields, pasture lands and hayfields have been created; the forests have been cut and planted. Unnecessary profit making has been avoided. The variety of Estonian landscapes combines wilderness, semi-natural communities and cultivated land.

Until Estonia’s re-independence in 1991, Pähkla village in Saaremaa had a kolkhoz which provided jobs for all the villagers. Lembri Uudu also worked in the kolkhoz as a tractor driver. After the collapse of the Soviet Union, the kolkhoz was disbanded, most of Pähkla’s villagers lost their jobs and Uudu died. But sometimes it happens that a person’s vital force arises after death. Lembri Uudu died at such a time that he became a hero who still energizes the villagers and keeps the spirit of the kolkhoz alive.

Masing`s Landscape. Part III. Death is Lodging in the Field

The documentary reflects Uku Masing's life as an inner migrant during the restricted conditions in the Soviet era, including the repressions by KGB and keeping quiet about the writer. The main channel for distributing Masing's work was manual copying. As the last part of the film trilogy, the film follows the scope and influence of such activity while combining the subjects of KGB, Masing's wife and manual copying of Masing's work based on recollections by about thirty people touched by the great man.

Mati Hõbemägi was a head of socialist agricultural holding in Järva county, Estonia. After the collapse of the Soviet regime Mati decided to turn the page in his life. During a decade, Mati together with his supporters have made local forests known across Europe. Every year, hunters take about 200 tons of grain to the forests, make large forage areas and pay close attention to the fact that all activities related to the forests would be in accordance with laws and the code of ethics. Nevertheless, there are still people whose careless behaviour causes irreversible harm to nature.

Art historian Villem Raam introduces three medieval architectural monuments in Estonia - Karja St. Catherine's Church, Muhu St. Catherine's Church and Pöide St. Mary's Church - in Muhu and Saaremaa islands. All three churches are genetically related. We can see the grand old man of Estonian art history in the situation most characteristic to him - communicating and working with old buildings. Villem Raam vividly mediates the artwork of medieval construction masters, interprets symbols of medieval art and the world view of a medieval man. According to Raam, without knowing the background information it is difficult to appreciate the value of architectural monuments. The documentary expresses the idea that our responsibility is to preserve unique buildings for our future generations since the architectural monuments are an important part of the cultural heritage of Estonia and Europe.

Men from the Fisherman’s Village

The first Estonian post-war feature film tells the story about local fishermen who have to make a decisive choice. When their boat drifts away with the storm to the coast of Finland, Soviet borderguards starts immediately suspect them. However, what counts more to the fishermen is the fact that they discover - men from the same village won't always stick together.

Men in Soldier’s Overcoats

After being mobilized to the Red Army and their hard experience in the battalions, Estonian soldiers are formed into the Estonian Rifle Corps. Many of them, including Enn Kalm, lack motivation to fight. On their long way back to homeland and during the battles at Velikiye Luki, the Estonian men will recover their strength and realize the idea of fighting. On the banks of Emajõgi River, Enn and his fellow soldiers have to face their compatriots who wear the enemy's uniform. What about the feelings and behaviour of the men who had to put on the soldier's overcoats due to the times of war? The war film depicts the real side of the war without pathos and the way hard-working Estonian soldiers relate themselves to the war, yearning for coming back home.

Mephistopheles

This happened a few years ago in Santiago de Compostela, in the world's oldest hotel. I had presented what I thought was a brilliant idea to Linnar Priimägi at the tea table, when the esteemed professor became irritated and unleashed Mephistopheles from himself. This was quite a firework. In the next 15 minutes, I learned the whole truth about myself. Priimägi wondered how the earth could ever carry such a stupid person. After finishing his enlightening diatribe at my address, he relented and said, “Manfred, you have to make a movie about me.” I refused immediately. I may be stupid, but not as stupid to make a film about Priimägi. Unfortunately, things went differently, and Mephistopheles achieved his will. I'm not going to retell the content of the film here, which would be as pointless as revealing a punchline before the anecdote is told. Let me just say that this film is a revenge for all the bitter words I have had to hear at my address. Or, as Goethe writes in Faust, "I am part of that power which eternally wills evil and eternally works good."

Fortunately after some fighting everything gets sorted out.

Miriam will not let the hen bring the ball inside. The hen does not obey, and then wants somebody to play ball with her. She even snatches the remote control so that Miriam and little brother would not be able to watch TV. Chasing the hen to get the remote control back, little brother happens to break father’s and mother’s wedding picture. And appears very unhappy and scared. When parents come home, Miriam takes the blame on herself. She is made to stand in the corner for punishment. Little brother cannot bear it and admits his guilt. When it turns out that during the chase the remote control has also suffered damage, the hen finally has to confess that she was behind it all.

Miriam finds old photos. While watching them she actually starts seeing all the world around her in black and white. And so to the Little Brother and to the Hen. But the black and white world makes them sad. Luckily there is a rainbow from what the Hen brings colours back. Together they will colour the surrounding back to normal. When Mother and Father come back home everything is in order and it seems, that all the changes have been only fantasy… But was it?

Miriam is in the kitchen, making a milkshake with the food processor. The chicken, too is interested in the appliance, but keeps pressing wrong buttons and finally it crashes on the floor. As Miriam is busy ironing, the chicken starts fixing the food processor herself. It seems to work. Later mother wants to use it, but the appliance has gone berserk. I turns out that the chicken has climbed into it.

When the rain is over, Mother takes everybody to the park to rake the fallen leaves. The Hen is still trying to join the flocks but all his attempts to fly end on the pile of leaves. Afterwards at home, Little Brother and Father are making paper planes and flying them around ant the Hen also gets a nice flight on a paper plane.

The hen enjoys playing around with kites. When Miriam has no more time for it, the hen convinces the little brother to go along. But the kite is too big for little brother and it flies him up to a treetop. Miriam and the hen need to act fast to get him down. As joint effort it works.

Up a tree, on a nestbox there is a starling trilling to Miriam. This is spotted by Hen, sitting tediously on a window-ledge. As Father has just finished making a scooter for the little brother, Hen requires that he should make a nestbox for her …

The family is outing. Mother and father are laying the picnic table, the small ones start playing on a meadow. The hen wanders into somebody’s vegetable patch and is scared to half-death seeing a scarecrow. Everybody starts looking for her and the little brother encounters a snake. But the chicken is brave now and ends up as the hero of the day.

Miriam and her family are building a snowman. There is a stray dog watching them to do it and who definitely likes the snowman very much. The dog won’t leave, though it is very cold. The children bring him inside and construct a nice place from paper-boxes. Hen is the only one who does not share the joy of all others. And the Hen is the one who faces the most anxious moments. The dog’s owner shows up in the morning and we shall find out the reason the dog loved the snowman so much. Finally even the Hen relents.

An aging man leaves his wife and sets off on his way to Fujiyama, the mountain of his dreams. Fujiyama is not his destination alone, though – thousands of people striving to make it to the mountaintop bustle about, each carrying his suitcase. The mountain itself consists of hundreds of thousands of suitcases. The inexorable climb to the top reveals the background of the entire exercise to the main character: the suitcase of everyone that reaches the top bites their head off, and the lifeless corpses fall into a crater. Prior to that, though, the suitcase sings an incredibly beautiful tune with a woman’s voice, from which those striving for the top gain ever more inspiration. Our hero, though, makes an unprecedented decision – he tosses a burning cigarette into his suitcase and then throws the burning suitcase into the crater, causing an earthquake. The mountain rips apart, the earth swallows thousands, entire cities are destroyed in the ruins of card houses, suitcases and headless corpses fly through the air. But the man makes it back home. His wife’s gigantic breast no longer moves, however – it towers before him as a lifeless white mountain.

It can approvingly be said of Freddy that he isn’t normal – not on stage nor in life. Freddy’s oeuvre and life are equivalent – he gives everything his all. What makes Freddy interesting is not the delight of social or textual games but rather the magnitude of what he puts at stake, the possibility of completely losing himself, and the depth of foreseeable human or metaphysical distress.

But having feasted on valerian they fall asleep on their hunt and the mice harness them in front of a mousetrap and get a good ride.

The boys are talking about how they got into Puiatu special school and the new bad habits that they acquired there. Their attitudes and destinies differ. The boys share their dreams, they sing and play the guitar. "Oh, Estonia" has a beautiful yet sad sound, just like expressing the spoilt lives of the boys.

Politician Aadu and his wife set out to pick mushrooms on a day when he gets a call from a journalist confronting him with regard to suspected corruption. By coincidence the married couple find themselves in a car with a pompous rock idol named Zäk. After discovering that the spot his wife has chosen to pick mushrooms is full of vacationers, Aadu decides to find a quieter place. The woods where he ultimately ends up, however, are perhaps too deep and inhospitable, and finding a way out may not be easy….

My Mother, the Sea

“η μητέρα μου, η θάλασσα” (“my mother, the sea”) is a short animated film, which explores and symbolically expresses my grieving process for my mother’s loss, from her passing until today. This three year journey is captured allegorically in this film as a weaving of two parallel paths; the mother’s journey to the afterlife and the parallel grieving states of her child. From the last breath, to the mourning and the only temporal salvation from it. It is an observation of her transition, which her child follows with its personal emotional dissolve.

Nail I

A nail is generally known as a hard metal object, but they are the only characters of this film, presenting an extremely expressive pantomime performance. We witness the meeting of two nails, their passionate tango and a kiss, as the result of which a small nail-baby is born. In another short episode we can see a scene in the street with a quarrelsome drunk who must be disciplined by a policeman-magnetic iron. There is a circus with a lion tamer and a lion who earns an applause devouring its master. We can see a wheedling and flattering nail trying to curry favor with a bossy hammer. But all these episodes so characteristic of human nature have been expressed only by the means of nails, by giving them life.

To guard their souls, they’ll give them away to thieving creatures made of wood and metal called kratts, who help their masters by stealing more. They steal even if their barns are already overflowing. Stealing is an obsession that makes the villagers more and more like the soulless creatures they command, the kratts. The main character of the film is a young farm girl named Liina who is hopelessly and forlornly in love with a village boy named Hans. Her longing makes the girl become a werewolf and jump into an ice-cold pond. She’s ready to die in the name of love. The pragmatic farmers are faced with a question: is the life that they’ve won through so much toil worth anything, if it lacks a soul? Estonian pagan and European Christian mythologies come together in this film. Both mythologies look for a miracle; for an ancient force that gives one a soul. This film is about souls – longing for a soul, selling your soul, and living without a soul.

Johannes Pääsuke and his assistant Harri Volter, a Baltic German medical student, played by prominent Estonian comedians Ott Sepp and Märt Avandi, travel by train and on horse carriage from Tartu to Petseri and Värska and end up in most surreal adventures leading them to one conclusion: a man has to do what a man has to do. A year later, in 1913, Johannes Pääsuke filmed the very first Estonian feature film: Bear Hunt in the Pärnu County.

Snow Leopard

Snow Leopard was an honorary title awarded to Soviet mountaineers who had conquered every 7000-metre high summits in the Soviet Union. This title of honour was also given to Estonian top mountaineer and photographer Jaan Künnap. Künnap concentrated on mountaineering in 1970s. As a photographer, Künnap has been internationally acknowledged mostly for his photos of mountains. Besides mountains he is also inspired by female body. The documentary focuses on the three main things in Künnap's life: photography, mountains and women. Yet, alpinism opens up another side in Künnap - the Snow Leopard is a youth tutor. During the filmmaking (1998-1999), Künnap reaches the understanding that a mountaineering school must be established.

The Circle

The film follows a group of adults and their children who in the summer of 2014, decide to leave their customary life arrangement and start the first intentional eco-community in Estonia. They scrap together their savings and buy an old manor lot with 33 hectars of agricultural land and 3750 square meters of half-derelict houses. Their experiment was inspired by the growing movement of global eco-villages. They step out of society as we know it, deconstructing the basic pillars of life, from nuclear family, to education, to relationships and consumption. Their goal is to build non-violent co-operative relations among themselves, harmonious relations, and sustainable life style with a small footprint. The film follows the dramatic events in the community for 5 years, from their blissful idealistic beginnings in 2014 until their dramatic collapse in 2019.

After the screening of the first picture – “Some Like It Hot” – the audience imply that the local music teacher Lili looks exactly like Marilyn Monroe. After meeting Lili, Father Giorgi’s balance between cleric and secular world starts to quiver – the woman is extremely sexy and the temptation is difficult to resist.

The Diary of Vaino Vahing

In 1968–1984, Vaino Vahing kept a diary about real events and persons in his own subjective interpretation. It reflects the cultural life of Tartu, love affairs, bohemian parties, and intellectual quests of the time. Vahing was interested in borderline situations, crossing the borders. He drew no clear line between art and life. Vahing provoked people, tried to make them lose their masks, their self-control. He called this provoking the Spiel or play. We are looking at a creator who has made disharmony his source of inspiration, who experiences “the greatest torment in love”. One who fears to lose himself in love. A human perceiving the great power of love and responding subconsciously with disharmony. The red line in the diary of Vahing is sacrificing life for art. The life where everyday burns to ashes and nothing but pure art remains. Is this possible at all or do we still have to try to love first? To err is human, as well as to suffer from the consequences. But does a person suffer just because erring, or is suffering an inevitable part of a human being? A part, deeper reasons of which remain a secret? The film does not try to judge Vahing but cast some light into these black holes on the verge of which he performed his balancing act that makes him human and his creations ever enchanting.

The Dress

A woman tries to remember the highlights of her life, or maybe dreams about them. Who is that woman, whose dress knows a beautiful-exiting life with kitchen utensils? We don’t see the woman never intact, though we move along her body, rather along her dress, since the dress and the body can be the same. From time-to-time different insects appear to laugh about the woman’s innocent dreams, just as guzzling unrealizable dreams. They predict end and death, nobody knows – through guillotine or kitchen knife.

In 1952 a young fencing champion Endel arrives in a small town Haapsalu to work as a physical training teacher. For an introvert man it is hard to get contact with the children who have been through a lot. In spite of the opposition of the principal of the school, Endel manages to get a permit to teach fencing for children. Slowly it becomes a therapy for the children as well as the teacher himself – a way to deal with everyday grim. The defeated principal is holding a grudge and starts to investigate, why did the champion of the Soviet Union really come to a small town. “The Fencer” is partly based on true life events of an Estonian sportsman and coach Endel Nelis (1925-1993)

When Eerik and his companions go on another night sea trip, they are aware of the danger of getting caught by the border guard. Spirit smuggling to Finland during the era of the Dry Law pays off, so the risk must be taken. After all, he needs a house to live in with Hilda, and a boat to work on the sea. And even if something goes wrong, an old man Nymann will help with his money. Yet, Aleks, the new chief at the borderguard office, has different views. Having fought at the Estonian War of Independence, he cannot see that money would buy off the authorities of the Republic of Estonia. While catching the spirit smugglers, Aleks will get involved in a ruthless, big game where friends can turn out your enemies and the other way round.

Textile artist Anu Raud enjoys life on her grandfather’s farm in Kääriku. She has never thought about demolishing something there just because it’s old. The House Guard

Portrait documentary about two characters - Tallinn Linnahall and its guard Peeter. Once the pride of Tallinn, Linnahall has become a desolate building; yet, it has its own faithful supporters. In every three days, Peter works 24-hour shift here as a guard. The monumental palace of culture and sports was built for the summer olympic games in 1980 - the building that now looks as a ghost castle. Peeter loves this somber house - its grandiosity still reminds of the glorious old days. The guard knows that when the building stays empty it will perish just like a man without a soul. And now the solitary man serves as the soul of the abandoned building.

At bedtime, Sandman Matiś footprints appear from nowhere on the sand. The Master of Dreams spreads the dreamsand in co-operation with Pillow Katis onto piglet, gentlemen in black, the tumbler, a rabbit chasing hunter and on angel Tõnu. The Pillow Katis put dream pillows under every faller to make falling asleep softer and safer as well. Sandman Mati also caters dream sand onto the eyelids of a sleepless child.

Together with Helena, who is better equipped with esoteric knowledge, they set off for a cross-country car trip on a nice summer day. This is a humorous story about a chimney-sweep who happened to stay without work, because the smoke disappeared from the town; he had to find a new job. He started to put up the TV antennas to the roofs.

The Last Ones

“The Last Ones” is a Nordic Western that takes place in the untamed Lapland tundra. The protagonist is young miner Rupi, who hopes to scrape together enough money through excavating the tundra to forever shake the suffocating dust of the mining village from his feet. But the work has come to a halt because Rupi’s reindeer herder father refuses to sell his land. What’s more, the manipulative mine owner nicknamed the Fisherman has his eye on Rupi’s friend’s wife, a woman who Rupi is also secretly in love with. The Last Soldiers

Documentary about five protagonists, Estonian men who fought in the ranks of Finnish army against the Soviet Union, and whom Finland gave out to Russia after the war. They suffered under the repressions of NKVD, the People's Commissariat for Internal Affairs. The former so-called Finnish Boys and the Finnish prison guards of that time recall their dramatic adventures. The main character of the film is an old minister of a village church, a former Finnish Boy Paul Saar. In order to forward the political picture of that time, the filmmakers have used plenty of authentic film materials from Estonian and Finnish archives, NKVD files, documents of the Finnish Security Police, excerpts from President Paasikivi personal diary etc.

The Männard Family

The Manslayer/The Virgin/The Shadow

The Manslayer employs a theme known in Scandinavian and Estonian folklore. The time frame of the story is from the early morning of a wedding day until the early morning of the following day. The characters are driven by force majeure – the local customs and rituals which were common a hundred years ago. The leading character Maara is a young bride who is about to start her life in her new family. The Virgin, set in the spring of 1949, tells the story of a young woman called Elina, who has been deported from Ingria into Estonia. In fear of being deported to Siberia, she enters into a fictitious marriage with an Estonian man named Heino. The wedded couple live in the verandah of the flat of Heino's uncle, each keeping to their respective corner and sleeping in separate beds. Someone informs the NKVD (the Soviet law enforcement agency) of the fictitious marriage and the couple are called in for interrogation. The Shadow moves in the present. The main character, Luna Lee, has decided to flee from home. Is there something else besides emptiness somewhere? As luck would have it, she becomes a witness to the failing relationship between an unemployed actor and his wife. In contrast, Pastor Theophilus offers Luna Lee a contract with God. However, Theophilus ends up being useless as a savior as well. The common link between the three short stories is the leading character: Maara, Elina and Luna Lee are all played by the same actress.

The Master

A dog Popi and a monkey Huhuu are waiting for their Master to come home and one day he is just not coming any more… From this particular day there starts their mutual life. Popi, being actually smarter and stronger capitulates in front of monkey’s whims symbolizing with it his obedience and submissiveness. In the other hand, Huhuu symbolizes licentiousness and silliness.

The Master of Kõrboja

Anna, the daughter of an elderly owner of Kõrboja farm, is told by her father that if she won't move into their home farm then it will be sold to strangers. The Midday Ferry

The Statue

The Winds of Milky Way

Documentary of cultural anthropology about the ethnography and ethnogenesis of the Finno-Ugric peoples is a sequel to the documentary "The Waterfowl People" (1970) directed by Lennart Meri. The author of the film interprets the kinship, linguistic and cultural relations of the Finno-Ugric peoples. Finns, Vepsians, Votes, Setos, Erzya-Mordvinians, Mansis, Hungarians, Sámi, Nganasans and Estonians appear in the film. The film was shot in 1977 on locations in northern Finland, Sámi, Vepsia, Votia, Mordovia, Khantia-Mansia, Hungary, the Taymyr Peninsula, Setomaa region in Estonia and in Saaremaa and Muhu islands, Estonia. Some footage was also filmed in Nenetsia in 1970. The film was the first international co-production completed in collaboration with Finnish Mainos TV and Hungarian Television.

The Wings

The film is based on the correspondence between a book character, inventor Jaan Tatikas, created by the Estonian literary classic Eduard Bornhöhe (1862-1923) and the famous Italian polymath, Renaissance luminary Leonard oda Vinci’s spikrit. Both men were eager to give the man wings and fly him up in the blue-blue sky. “For once you have tasted flight you will walk the earth with your eyes turned skywards, for there you have been and there you will long to return.” This is how the Renaissance luminary, the pioneer of aviation Leonardo da Vinci expressed himself – a man, who died nearly 500 years ago.

The Woman in the Picture

The artist Lauri Sillak, aka Laurentsius, starts painting for his new exhibition in an unusual place – a vacant wooden house in the heart of Tallinn, in a house that has belonged to the creator of the art of film and photography in Estonia, Johannes Parikas and his wife Lilli. The Parikas name truly set the fashion in the interwar Republic of Estonia. Several movie theatres in Tallinn, the Estonia Films film studio, a famous photography studio in Tallinn’s Old Town, the first Miss Estonia competition, portraits of prominent statesmen, and the photographing of all of Estonia were all connected to that name. The walls of the mysterious dwelling of the Parikas family conceal within themselves the traces of people who in their day were prominent in society, and the life of those times is uncovered from beneath the accumulated cultural layers. The portraits of contemporary beauties and fashion icons appear on the wallpapers of that time, but the ghost of Lilli, the mistress of the house, is restless.

The Year of the Monkey

The animated film “The Year of the Monkey” is a story of a monkey who lives in a zoo and, as chance would have it, is forced to start living like a human being. The monkey is mistaken for a drunken Santa Claus who got lost and ended up in the zoo, and he is taken away for treatment of alcohol abuse. There all the monkey’s hairs are shaved off, after which he outwardly seems to be a proper citizen. Human society quickly accepts its new member, the shaved monkey, and the monkey becomes an honored public figure.

Three Jolly Fellows

An experienced and worldly Mossbeard, a cheerful and active Muffie and unpractical professor Halfshoe get to know one another while queueing up for ice-cream. They are all lonely: Muffie sends letter to himself, Halfshoes only companion is a little mouse. They decide to go on a journey together. The city is plagued by an army of homeless cats. By using Halfshoes mouse as a bait the cats are led to the forest and imprisoned on a lonely island.

Tick-Tack

Watchmaker controls the time, but the mouse living in the watchmaker’s workshop controls the clocks… This is a film about time and its ephemeral nature.

Time to Love

Seven middle-aged people live and work in a small place called Tabivere in Central Estonia. In their sincere and heartfelt interviews they openly speak about their ups and downs in life. Life in a remote rural place is not easy as many locals are unemployed. Even those who have a job won't be able to afford much. The lives of the seven people portrayed in the film have not been easy - everyone has experienced certain tragic events in their lives. Despite that, all of them are still able to feel happiness, appreciate small things in life, love their close ones and family. They come together to the amateur theatre in Tabivere in order to add some creativity in their lives.

Timeless

There are crimes that won't expire. One June night in 1941, Soviet authorities deported more than 10,000 people to Siberia from Estonia. Those who stayed alive in Siberia and made it back to homeland will have the chance to speak in the film. FIlmmaker Andres Sööt, whose family was also among those breaking apart because of the deportation in 1941, dedicates the film to all those sent to Siberia. This is a timeless responsibility - not to forget.

Heino Raagen and his war comrades begin a new battle while arriving at their home village - establishing a collective farm. The sufferings and fears of the war have exhausted people; nevertheless, they still stick together and protect their close ones. Heino's girlfriend Valve hides the plans of her brother Robert hiding in the forest from him; as a result, their relationship will fall apart. Life goes on, but disappointment and anger will take their toll even when years have gone by.

Traces of Empire: Chemical Pollution

Foreign troops that occupied Estonia considered preserving nature and healthy living environment to be rather unimportant. Soviet generals often planned environmentally dangerous military bases in beautiful places in nature, near water catchment areas and bodies of water. Soviet army had about 1565 military objects in Estonia, including 5 aerodromes, more than 50 rocket bases, test sites etc. Since Estonia regained its independence, our environmental protectors have suffered uncertainty whether all sources of pollution and the remains of hazardous substances have been found and neutralized.

Traces of Empire: Mechanical Pollution

The opening scene of the documentary marks the territories in Estonia where the military objects dating back to the era of Soviet occupation were located. Usually these were built in beautiful natural places near lakes and rivers. According to 1991, about 1565 military objects (covering the area of about 871 km2) were used by the Soviet army in Estonia that makes 2% of the whole territory of the state. Today most buildings have been destructed by accidental looters and natural forces.

Traces of Empire: Paldiski 1994

After the Bases Agreement that was imposed on Estonia by the Soviet Union in 1939, Paldiski became a Soviet military base. In the beginning, after the World War 2, the town was also open to local Estonians; however, the decision that was made in 1962 to establish a training center for Soviet nuclear-powered submariners made Paldiski a closed military town for 30 years. In 1968, the training center started to educate the crew members of nuclear-powered submarines.

Traces of Empire: Radioactive Pollution

One of the legacies of the Soviet era is radioactive pollution - an important example of the colonial policies of USSR to illustrate reluctance to act in an environmentally friendly way. Among the biggest producers of radioactive pollution in Estonia were Sillamäe Uranium Enriching Factory; the burial place of radioactive waste in Saku; underground ignition complex of nuclear rockets near Valga; and the training centre of submarines in Paldiski.

A documentary about a woman's journey along the future route corridor of the Rail Baltic railway. While trying to broadcast live from the 213km long route, the artist Hanna Samoson meets people on her way whose lives will be inextricably linked with the future railway. Through hopes, humour and the pain of loss, "Trail Baltic" shows how people affected by the huge project feel. The film's backdrop is an unbroken landscape that, but all indications, is destined to change soon. Our story could also be told about the Nursipalu military training ground, the pulp mill by Emajõgi or the nuclear power plant, because in all these examples big technological ideal collides with the desire to preserve something that is extremely important to some of us. This is not a traditional documentary, it is a road movie through bushes, ditches, bogs and groves. It is a film where encounters with people are random, direct, and honest. A film that is neither for or against Rail Baltic, but that shows the plurality of opinions, the process of coping with changes, and captures life and landscapes in one vanishing moment in time.

But when nature refuses to bend, the neighbour turns out to be a roughneck rival, and Krõõt keeps giving birth to daughters, Andres struggles to find the right way. In his desperate search for truth and justice – from the court, the tavern and the Bible, he sacrifices his family, his friends and eventually himself. The beautiful dream of prosperous and nurturing Robber’s Rise gives way to an obsession, resulting in none of the things Andres wanted and everything he was afraid of. The film is made the frame of EV100 Programme dedicated to the 100th anniversary of the Republic of Estonia.

Tukdam: Between Worlds

Most of us think of death as something clear-cut, and that medical science has it neatly figured out. This feature documentary explodes such assumptions through its exploration of a phenomenon that blurs life and death to an unprecedented degree. In what Tibetan Buddhists call tukdam, advanced meditators die in a consciously controlled manner. Though dead according to our biomedical standards, they often stay sitting upright in meditation; remarkably, their bodies remain fresh and lifelike, without signs of decay for days, sometimes weeks after clinical death. Following ground-breaking scientific research into tukdam and taking us into intimate death stories of Tibetan meditators, the film juxtaposes scientific and Tibetan perspectives as it tries to unravel the mystery of tukdam.

The Committee of the Communist Party sends its representative Peeter Arro who will learn that the manager Mari acts as a tyrant for the local people. She has to resign during the elections of the new manager. Being without authority has a damaging effect on her so she starts to regain her position with the help of her old tricks.

Tõnis Hoopkaup, head of the fishing collective farm, receives two significant presents for his wedding day - a new trawler and a cigarette case with the image of an anchor. Tõnis is married to Riina but he is attracted by Lidia who looks like someone he was in love with long time ago and whose father was once known as "the king of the fishing village". Tõnis believes that he must acquire similar authoritativeness in order to accomplish everything that he has planned in the collective farm and to become respected and successful.

Four Estonians who have escaped to Sweden during the war return to the Soviet Estonia in 1950s. The four diversionists are hired by the Western Secret Service. Difficulties arise when they cross the border with an injured companion - the rest of three have to decide what to do next. Soviet reality is not something they have expected and cooperation with the local people won't be any success. The agents must risk their conscience, their families and lives. National Security will launch its counter operation full of exciting turns.

Walker on Water

“Walker on Water” is a film about being a woman, told through the life and work of Estonia’s most beloved and internationally most known contemporary poetess Kristiina Ehin.

War

Who is a (professional) soldier in today’s world? How does he cross the Bridge of Death? Does he have to sacrifice himself for the chain of command in order to participate in situations where none of what he was taught in childhood applies anymore? Where do you draw the line between justified and unjustified suffering? Euphemisms may not work on a personal level. The glorification of war has aggravating, not alleviating effects. War is a story about a peacekeeper, who after having returned from a mission could not come to terms with his life anymore, with the life between the present and the eternity. The documentary was filmed in Afghanistan and Australia.

War over the Flying Squirrel

With their plans to expand the protected zone of the Siberian flying squirrel, a species on the verge of extinction, nature conservationists have upset the landowners of the protected areas. The owners are deprived of the opportunity to earn income from their forestland, without being offered adequate compensation. A couple of dozen families in Viru County must assume the nature conservation responsibility of “the whole of Estonia”. They are clearly not interested in being bestowed all that honour and decide to take on the battle of defending their rights. The ensuing passion is difficult to keep under control. The film observes this process during one year from the trenches on both sides of the front line.

The film about Merle Karusoo, the Estonian stage director and collector of local biographies, takes a look at the stories of her own life, reflecting on her personal beliefs and the role of remembering throughout life.

Waves of Passion

Rex Ronney, a Brazilian writer, infiltrates a gang of alcohol smugglers in the Gulf of Finland as a source of inspiration and research for his next novel. In the midst of his adventures, Rex will also find love.

The midsummer of 1930 brought to Estonia the most spectacular film production of the interwar period, which was also the country’s first international coproduction. In cooperation with experienced German filmmakers, a large part of Waves of Passion (Wellen der Leidenschaft) was shot in Tallinn, around Loksa and on the island of Hara in late June and early July.

The stars of this story about alcohol smuggling and passionate love are Vladimir Gaidarov, a heartbreaker born in Poltava, Ukraine, and Ita Rina, a stunning Slovenian film star then making waves in the Central European film world. In mass scenes, local border guards and the people of the Loksa area were used as extras. Of the Estonian stage talents, Hugo Laur, Ants Eskola and Robert Rood appeared in the film.

Gaidarov, who had started his acting career at the Moscow Art Theatre in 1910s, was familiar to Estonian audiences from the stage, having guest-starred here in 1921 at the invitation of Paul Pinna, and even more so from the silver screen, having performed in German films made by famous directors such as Friedrich Wilhelm Murnau and Carl Theodor Dreyer, while residing in Berlin between 1921 and 1933. Waves of Passion was Gaidarov’s debut (and only) work as a film director and producer, made under the aegis of his newly formed German production company, Wladimir Gaidarow-Film, and the Estonian company A/S Urania. The latter was also founded specifically for Waves of Passion by the then-representative of the U.S. Fox Corporation in Estonia, Richard Ley, along with Sigrid Ley and Roman Birkenberg, all residents of Tallinn and citizens of Estonia. Thus, it can be said that Waves of Passion was one of the first films made in Estonia under the supervision of a female producer (although not quite the first, as the adventure film Jüri Rumm, which had premiered a year earlier, was financed by Ida Jershova).

Waves of Passion was released in Estonia as a silent film, accompanied by live orchestral music, and premiered simultaneously in three major cinemas in Tallinn (Bi-Ba-Bo, Kungla and Rekord) for a whole week, which was quite unusual at the time. In Germany, but also in countries such as Argentina and Denmark, it was distributed with a synchronised soundtrack, consisting of sound effects and music composed by the Austrian composer Bert Reisfeld, and produced using a sound-on-disc system. It was in the Danish Film Institute’s Film Archive that this recording, long thought lost, was found in 2022 – albeit only in part, as four of the original eight discs have survived. The original negative of the film is lost, but the Film Archive of the National Archives of Estonia preserves the only vintage film element known to survive: a contemporary Estonian nitrate release print with trilingual intertitles in Estonian, German and Russian.

This 4K digital restoration, completed in 2023 at the Film Archive of the National Archives of Estonia, is accompanied by the partially surviving original soundtrack and music composed in 2023 by Cornelius Renz.

The restoration was realised with the support of “A Season of Classic Films”, an initiative of ACE – Association des Cinémathèques Européennes, part of European Commission’s Creative Europe MEDIA programme.

The developments in Estonia drew international attention. Could all this really be happening in a totalitarian country? The documentary is a compelling account of the events in Estonia in the year of Dragon, 1988, the changes in the lives (albeit superficial ones in the beginning) and the resurgence of Estonian national pride after 48 years of dormancy.

At home, Johannes must deal with his mother’s deteriorating mental health. As the tension grows, he finds himself at zero point, where he must completely reset his life to build it up from scratch. After being denounced as an outcast in school and frightened away from home by his mother’s developing schizophrenia, there is no other way out for Johannes but to start improving his life by reforming himself.
