Traces of Empire: Paldiski 1994

Live now
After the Bases Agreement that was imposed on Estonia by the Soviet Union in 1939, Paldiski became a Soviet military base. In the beginning, after the World War 2, the town was also open to local Estonians; however, the decision that was made in 1962 to establish a training center for Soviet nuclear-powered submariners made Paldiski a closed military town for 30 years. In 1968, the training center started to educate the crew members of nuclear-powered submarines.

Traces of Empire: Chemical Pollution

Live now
Foreign troops that occupied Estonia considered preserving nature and healthy living environment to be rather unimportant. Soviet generals often planned environmentally dangerous military bases in beautiful places in nature, near water catchment areas and bodies of water. Soviet army had about 1565 military objects in Estonia, including 5 aerodromes, more than 50 rocket bases, test sites etc. Since Estonia regained its independence, our environmental protectors have suffered uncertainty whether all sources of pollution and the remains of hazardous substances have been found and neutralized.

Traces of Empire: Mechanical Pollution

Live now
The opening scene of the documentary marks the territories in Estonia where the military objects dating back to the era of Soviet occupation were located. Usually these were built in beautiful natural places near lakes and rivers. According to 1991, about 1565 military objects (covering the area of about 871 km2) were used by the Soviet army in Estonia that makes 2% of the whole territory of the state. Today most buildings have been destructed by accidental looters and natural forces.

Traces of Empire: Radioactive Pollution

Live now
One of the legacies of the Soviet era is radioactive pollution - an important example of the colonial policies of USSR to illustrate reluctance to act in an environmentally friendly way. Among the biggest producers of radioactive pollution in Estonia were Sillamäe Uranium Enriching Factory; the burial place of radioactive waste in Saku; underground ignition complex of nuclear rockets near Valga; and the training centre of submarines in Paldiski.

Fast Eddy’s Old News

Live now
A freelance cameraman who earned his nickname Fast Eddy by often arriving at the scene of accident before the police and TV crime reporters. A lot of his material was used on the TV by CBC. The rest – hundreds of hours’ worth of tape that he didn’t manage to sell – is piled up in the rooms and the cellar at Eddy’s penthouse in downtown Toronto. Can you sell old news? What does old Ed remember and what do his old film reels say about himself? When do one’s own preparations for death come to an end and when do you change into a ward, a potted plant, a piece of furniture?

Colours of the Islands

Live now
This visually striking film portrays three musicians from disparate parts of the globe, whose common ground is not only talented virtuosity but also their heritage as “islanders”. Saxophonist Villu Veski from Muhu Island in Estonia, Faroe Island singer Eivør Palsdottir and Barak “Bird” Levi from Hawaii all draw, in their unique ways, inspiration from their natural environments and age-old traditions. Underscoring each musician’s works are subtle but expressive differences that characterize the spirit and nuance of their own island habitat. This film invites the senses to take flight.

The Call of Silence

Live now
Margit, Vitali, Raivo and Riho are deaf; they’re devoted Pentecostals. Having once felt the touch of Christ themselves, their aim is now to spread the message. From one deaf person to another. The task is enormous, as there are over 346 million people in the world who are completely or partially unable to hear. „The call of silence” is a story of Margit’s, Vitali’s, Raivo’s and Riho’s journeys in the most distant and exotic locations in the world – from Kazakhstan to Greece, from Russia into China. What is their message? What joys, hardships and risks does their missionary work bring?

Yoyogi

Live now
Yoyogi is a place of freedom and going beyond everything human. Like the first flight to the sky. This film combines two strange and seemingly overlapping peculiarities. On the one hand, there is a distant, almost scientific in its dryness, observation of ordinary scenes of people’s life in the park, on the other hand, a feeling of some kind of magic and the impossibility of what is happening.

Hippodrome

Live now
Located in the heart of Tallinn, the capital of Estonia, the Hippodrome used to be the centre of entertainment for all its neighbouring countries. For nearly 100 years, it has lured visitors with bets and races, and the chance to try their luck with the totalisator. All that remains today of this majestic racecourse is a lonely horse stable. Now it is more of a social club than a prestigious racetrack. Animal lovers and sports fans still meet here despite the poor conditions. Bizarre parties and engagement photo sessions are held at the Hippodrome, and this is where the best Swedish racehorses are still trained. This hypnotic black and white film is an ode to a disappearing era and a unique subculture in a place soon to be demolished to make way for yet another brand new office building complex in the city’s never-ending triumphal march of business-oriented real estate development.

Searching for Light

Live now
Raivo Hein is a successful internet businessman, amateur astronomer, adventurer and journeyman. About both an idealist and a materialist at the same time. About probably the first Estonian astronaut, because he has the ticket to Sir Richard Branson’s spaceflight on SpaceShipTwo almost in his pocket. Raivo believes in science, in the common sense of man, and in the bright future of mankind. He believes that a thousand years old man has already been born today. But is there anyone who would like to live that long? This film talks about a man’s search of his path, about balancing between spiritual and material reality. Thoughts on the future of mankind, on the mystery of life and the universe. Arthur C. Clark already believed that the future of mankind lies in the space. Raivo Hein feels the same way.

Anthill

Live now
Anthill is a portrait of a giant garage located in the largest Soviet blockhouse area of Tallinn. Here 700 garage box owners form an extraordinary men’s club and vary from those who just keep their cars to those who adapt their boxes for living. The complex is a unique biosphere with the existence of private saunas, a restaurant, an animal clinic and other artifacts of life stuck in time 20 years back.

Dreaming Arizona

Live now
In the Arizona desert, along route 66, we find an all American small-town, Winslow. At the town’s high school, we meet five teenagers, each with their own dream of the future. Like all teenagers around the world, they are in a transition where they have to shape their own lives, find a way out of childhood and create a new identity as adults. Their desire for freedom is strong, and there are consequences when parents, society or their own conscience restrict it. Film director, Jon Bang Carlsen, examines the teenagers’ basic need to stage their own lives as the documentary imperceptibly seeps into fiction. Together with the main characters, the director has created some imaginary life paths and thereby our teenagers comment on their own situation, the audiences’ anticipations and the director’s vision.

Tukdam: Between Worlds

Live now
Most of us think of death as something clear-cut, and that medical science has it neatly figured out. This feature documentary explodes such assumptions through its exploration of a phenomenon that blurs life and death to an unprecedented degree. In what Tibetan Buddhists call tukdam, advanced meditators die in a consciously controlled manner. Though dead according to our biomedical standards, they often stay sitting upright in meditation; remarkably, their bodies remain fresh and lifelike, without signs of decay for days, sometimes weeks after clinical death. Following ground-breaking scientific research into tukdam and taking us into intimate death stories of Tibetan meditators, the film juxtaposes scientific and Tibetan perspectives as it tries to unravel the mystery of tukdam.

The Woman in the Picture

Live now
The artist Lauri Sillak, aka Laurentsius, starts painting for his new exhibition in an unusual place – a vacant wooden house in the heart of Tallinn, in a house that has belonged to the creator of the art of film and photography in Estonia, Johannes Parikas and his wife Lilli. The Parikas name truly set the fashion in the interwar Republic of Estonia. Several movie theatres in Tallinn, the Estonia Films film studio, a famous photography studio in Tallinn’s Old Town, the first Miss Estonia competition, portraits of prominent statesmen, and the photographing of all of Estonia were all connected to that name. The walls of the mysterious dwelling of the Parikas family conceal within themselves the traces of people who in their day were prominent in society, and the life of those times is uncovered from beneath the accumulated cultural layers. The portraits of contemporary beauties and fashion icons appear on the wallpapers of that time, but the ghost of Lilli, the mistress of the house, is restless.

The Circle

Live now
The film follows a group of adults and their children who in the summer of 2014, decide to leave their customary life arrangement and start the first intentional eco-community in Estonia. They scrap together their savings and buy an old manor lot with 33 hectars of agricultural land and 3750 square meters of half-derelict houses. Their experiment was inspired by the growing movement of global eco-villages. They step out of society as we know it, deconstructing the basic pillars of life, from nuclear family, to education, to relationships and consumption. Their goal is to build non-violent co-operative relations among themselves, harmonious relations, and sustainable life style with a small footprint. The film follows the dramatic events in the community for 5 years, from their blissful idealistic beginnings in 2014 until their dramatic collapse in 2019.

Funeral Diaries

Live now

The everyday life of the three protagonists tells a bigger story of church, faith and a fading émigré identity. The main characters have a modern and bright outlook on life and while practicing a past profession try to adopt to the ever-changing world where everything old and familiar slips through the fingers like handful of dust.

Father Agaton serves small local Estonian Apostolic Orthodox Church congregations, performs blessings, and administers Communion. The Estonian Defense League member Hellat and his daughter Kateriina look for silver, which is supposedly buried in the ground. Sundial

Live now
In nature everything is in balance. In the circle of life, which never ends, everyone has their task - plants and mushrooms, insects and animals... Tis diverse orchestra always finds its rhythm and tone. For nearly seven years of exploring the periphery countryside of Estonia, this oneiric journey filmed on 16mm brings to the foreground the daily rhythms of ordinary people and animals in different ages and phases of their lives. Disco and Atomic War

Live now
The playful documentary tells the story about a strange war of information in Estonian SSR during the 1980s when the totalitarian power confronted the heroes of pop culture. And the heroes won. Western pop culture played extremely important part in developing the world view of the Soviet youth - today this may seem rather weird. Finnish Television, that was visible only for people living in Northern Estonia, was the only window to the world of dreams and that was out of reach for the authorities to be banned. The documentary combines political action with fictional stories based on the memories of the children who grew up at that time. Filmmakers bring to the viewer a humorous treatment about recent history where intelligence games and human tragicomedy are intertwined.

Trail Baltic

Live now
A documentary about a woman's journey along the future route corridor of the Rail Baltic railway. While trying to broadcast live from the 213km long route, the artist Hanna Samoson meets people on her way whose lives will be inextricably linked with the future railway. Through hopes, humour and the pain of loss, "Trail Baltic" shows how people affected by the huge project feel. The film's backdrop is an unbroken landscape that, but all indications, is destined to change soon. Our story could also be told about the Nursipalu military training ground, the pulp mill by Emajõgi or the nuclear power plant, because in all these examples big technological ideal collides with the desire to preserve something that is extremely important to some of us. This is not a traditional documentary, it is a road movie through bushes, ditches, bogs and groves. It is a film where encounters with people are random, direct, and honest. A film that is neither for or against Rail Baltic, but that shows the plurality of opinions, the process of coping with changes, and captures life and landscapes in one vanishing moment in time.

It reflects the cultural life of Tartu, love affairs, bohemian parties, and intellectual quests of the time. Vahing was interested in borderline situations, crossing the borders. He drew no clear line between art and life. Vahing provoked people, tried to make them lose their masks, their self-control. He called this provoking the Spiel or play. We are looking at a creator who has made disharmony his source of inspiration, who experiences “the greatest torment in love”. One who fears to lose himself in love. A human perceiving the great power of love and responding subconsciously with disharmony. The red line in the diary of Vahing is sacrificing life for art. The life where everyday burns to ashes and nothing but pure art remains. Is this possible at all or do we still have to try to love first? To err is human, as well as to suffer from the consequences. But does a person suffer just because erring, or is suffering an inevitable part of a human being? A part, deeper reasons of which remain a secret? The film does not try to judge Vahing but cast some light into these black holes on the verge of which he performed his balancing act that makes him human and his creations ever enchanting.

Tõnu Kõrvits. Moorland Elegies

Live now
Tõnu Kõrvits is a composer in his fifth decade who doesn’t open up easily. Though he is one of the most performed Estonian composers, Tõnu prefers to remain in the shadows. His person and music carry a secret that only unravels for those who can see behind the words, who forget themselves in the music and let the sounds Tõnu created take them along on a mystical, poetical journey that changes anyone who arrives at the end. The film “Moorland Elegies” is named after Tõnu’s nine-part choir cycle, based on Emily Brontë’s almost gothic, dark poetry, that invokes spiritual conditions delicately translated into natural imagery. Tõnu’s enchantingly powerful “Moorland Elegies” has been one of the most sold classical records on the Amazon charts and forms the musical and material core of the film. This is a film about a composer, his music and the people who are deeply touched by his music: Doris Kareva, Tõnis Kõrvits, Mark Raidpere, Kersti Kaljulaid, Gunnar Männik, Rein Ränk, Tiit Käit, Virve Liitvee.

Karula National Park

Live now
Karula National Park is situated almost on the southern border of Estonia, far away from big towns. It is a small world – one landscape, one forest, and one parish. The Karula landscape came into being 12 thousand years ago. Estonia was then covered with thick ice, which started to melt and therefore created several unusual shapes of landscape such as the rounded hills, stretched eskers, and ice flow melting slopes. All these forms make Karula almost a textbook example of an ice age-shaped landscape.

The recorded materials that have been unused for more than a decade have acquired extra value for making the colourful personal story as well as a funny retrospective describing the social life in Estonia during the turn of the century. The documentary observes Kirss's activities in the year of 2000 when Miss Estonia Evelyn Mikomägi reached among the top ten in Miss Universe Beauty Contest.

Estonian Nature: Alam-Pedja

Live now
Alam-Pedja is one of the largest nature reserves in Estonia, where there are wide valleys on the banks of flowing rivers, rare floodplain forests and swamps between the rivers. The nature there runs in a primeval rhythm, as it has been doing for the past millennia, and the human influence in this primeval nature is just as much as is needed to preserve the large communities created with the help of man - flood plains. However, the second largest city in Estonia is located nearby, from where more and more people move by boat along the rivers to Alam-Pedja, and the area is also surrounded by large highways where the flow of cars never stops. The face of Alam-Pedja is something primal and untouched, which reminds us of where we came from.

Landscape patterns

Live now
The nature documentary filmmakers move through all four seasons and four basic landscape types in Estonia: the swamp, the forest, the coast and the wooded meadow. Everything that appears in front of the camera lens, including people, will become a part of the landscape pattern. People have habitated Estonian territory for more than 10 thousand years. Withdrawal of the ice cap created a habitat that has been adjusted to human needs during thousands of years. Lots of fields, pasture lands and hayfields have been created; the forests have been cut and planted. Unnecessary profit making has been avoided. The variety of Estonian landscapes combines wilderness, semi-natural communities and cultivated land.

Can a person ever be free in a society, where intricate and obscure structures take control of their mind-set from an early age? The film looks at the making of a Russian citizen from a fresh angle. What happens to people’s free will and self-determination in such conditions?

A Fragile World

Live now
The film depicts two different worlds - man made and natural - opposites both in terms of content and form. One of the most striking features of Estonian nature are its bog landscapes. Bogs act as a kind of filter by absorbing exhaust gas and cleaning the air for people to breathe. Bogs are also good at safeguarding groundwater. Still, it is not all blue skies ahead for these natural landscapes. The film depicts two different worlds, opposites both in terms of content and form. Products of evolution, the irregular natural landscapes together with their inhabitants stand in opposition to manmade regularity, perfectly straight mining fields.

They are clearly not interested in being bestowed all that honour and decide to take on the battle of defending their rights. The ensuing passion is difficult to keep under control. The film observes this process during one year from the trenches on both sides of the front line.

Gori The Caricaturist

Live now
A richly animated documentary about the extremely popular caricaturist Gori, whose fate in Estonia at the beginning of the last century shows the balance between power and freedom like a mirror. In the Fellini-like world of Gori (1894-1944), farce and drama, mockery and big politics mix. There is no subject that Gori's pen will not mock until the winds turn and mouths are being closed. Power is concentrated in the hands of new dictators. And that power fears nothing more than its own ridiculousness. However, ridiculing the enemy is one of his most effective weapons. Gori the Caricaturist by Raimo Jõerand is all about talent. About the artist's temptation to waste and share his talent when it is accompanied by applause, and about the obligation to serve his talent even if it leads straight to destruction. Here, documentary narrative and grotesque animation intertwine. The story of a man who drew himself to death.

The documentary emphasizes the complicated relations between Estonian culture, media and enterprise. The city is offered a free monument and there is not a single tangible reasons to say no. The disputing parties will never agree due to different aesthetic attitudes, and there are various suspicions on the issue which authority the statue will embody.

The house, where his family was once supposed to live, has now become a home for hundreds or wooden sculptures, stained glass works and drawings. The older the artist gets, the easier his life becomes and the more talking is his work. A sketch on a piece of paper or the client's wish is just an impulse. Everything that is made, will be something else after a while.

The Best of Salieri

Live now
It is time to get out of the closet and show the world your teeth. The director, who considers himself to be Mozart, has been tootling with his films on the festival circuit for years, waiting for a big breakthrough. For an inexplicable reason, the world has not recognised his talent. Still, only Salieris have garnered the fame and the fortune. There is a simple conclusion. The world has not learned anything in 200 years and keeps repeating the same mistake. If all else fails, justice must be established by force and the world shown its proper place. Taking a bath, the great director is hit by a divine revelation – a manifesto is born to open the world’s eyes. The megalomaniac embarks on a crusade against a large and monstrous enemy, the system. This film will end the rule of the patron saint of all mediocre creators, Salieri, once and for all.

Long Live the Scandals!

Live now
Leonhard Lapin is the classic and the enfant terrible of Estonian contemporary art, constantly followed by scandals, lewd legends, and envious grumbling. Lapin confidently steps on the cornea of mediocrity, enjoying the situation to the fullest. Loved by his muses, the artist is not ashamed of his dalliances. He still has plenty at the grand old age of 70. The new Estonian film opens the doors to a disappearing Bohemianism, in which racy vocabulary reigns instead of political correctness.

In Bed With A Writer

Live now
The film's protagonist Peeter is a known and recognised writer in his home country. He has published 25 books. He has received eight national awards. The people have nicknamed him the Filth Writer. Peeter does not care about recognition, he drinks, parties, and often makes statements, which upset people. As a rule, Peeter writes about his bawdy life and unhappy relationships with women. After divorce, Peeter hasn't written in over a year. No woman, no fights, nothing to write about. Peeter's favourite writer and role model Bukowsky did not write for seven years. In his depression, Peeter comes up with the hare-brained idea of trying different roles: he learns striptease, offers to model for a racist photographer, dabs in masochism, tries to get in bed with artists and writers, sleeps on his parents' graves - basically, tests the limits with all sorts of imbecilities in order to escape the numbness. The result is a unique absurdity walking the line between dark humour and tragedy, occasionally crossing it.

Mephistopheles

Live now
This happened a few years ago in Santiago de Compostela, in the world's oldest hotel. I had presented what I thought was a brilliant idea to Linnar Priimägi at the tea table, when the esteemed professor became irritated and unleashed Mephistopheles from himself. This was quite a firework. In the next 15 minutes, I learned the whole truth about myself. Priimägi wondered how the earth could ever carry such a stupid person. After finishing his enlightening diatribe at my address, he relented and said, “Manfred, you have to make a movie about me.” I refused immediately. I may be stupid, but not as stupid to make a film about Priimägi. Unfortunately, things went differently, and Mephistopheles achieved his will. I'm not going to retell the content of the film here, which would be as pointless as revealing a punchline before the anecdote is told. Let me just say that this film is a revenge for all the bitter words I have had to hear at my address. Or, as Goethe writes in Faust, "I am part of that power which eternally wills evil and eternally works good."

The Story Of Peep Puks

Live now
An old filmmaker Peep Puks has directed 61 documentaries and created almost 40 programmes for television. In this film, he looks back on a lost time, the films that have accompanied him, and the colleagues without whom this all wouldn’t have happened. It’s an aspect of stories of the first post-war generation of Estonia and the birth of the Estonian documentary.

More than Life

Live now
Freddy Grenzmann is Estonia’s last rock star and the singer of the punk rock band Psychoterror. He’s also a poet. The rock star phenomenon is beyond ordinary norms. It’s larger than life. It can approvingly be said of Freddy that he isn’t normal – not on stage nor in life. Freddy’s oeuvre and life are equivalent – he gives everything his all. What makes Freddy interesting is not the delight of social or textual games but rather the magnitude of what he puts at stake, the possibility of completely losing himself, and the depth of foreseeable human or metaphysical distress.

Out of Fashion

Live now
We live in an era of global consumption where the rate of consumption is constantly increasing. It’s no secret that the fashion industry is at the forefront of this consumption rally. Thousands of factories in the third world produce not only clothing for big corporations, but also tons and tons of toxic waste. Fashion designer Reet Aus has an ambitious plan to change the world. Aus has realized that the only way to fight against the fashion industry is from the inside. The documentary “Out of Fashion” follows Reet Aus’s journey from Tallinn, through the fashion stages of Europe and the cotton plantations of South America, and right into the epicenter of mass production in Bangladesh.

The white land of Enderby

Live now
When the filmmakers director Andres Sööt and cameraman Mati Kask went to the high plain of Antarctic, the coldest point on Earth. They filmed on the South Pole from December 1968 to February 1969. Neutral, seemingly circumstantial film frames about the life of polar explorers and breathtakingly beautiful views of nature express the immeasurable indifference of the white hell of snow. The growing anxiety of a human being on a cold and lifeless continent can be soothed only by another living being, whether it be a man or an animal. The film talks about men in extraordinary conditions, loneliness, need for human closeness and understanding, with the backdrop of ancient nature. The soundtrack for the film was composed by Arvo Pärt.

As a result of the initiative of the youth programme of Estonian Television, a phenomenon such as "Hometown" was born in Estonia in October 1975. Tens, hundreds, even thousands of schoolboys and schoolgirls gathered in the old town of Tallinn on Sundays in order to get some easier jobs done, to explore the miracles in the old town, to edit their own newspaper, to organize meetings, excursions etc. and to get to know each other better. Leida Laius tries to find out how the young member of Kodulinn movement and their leader Tiina Mägi are doing at the beginning of 1980s. Tiina Mägi, Raivo E. Tamm, Hannes Astok, Epp Alatalu, Ulvi Pihel, Madis Jürgen, Mart Kalm and others talk about the acitivites of the movement.

Art historian Villem Raam introduces three medieval architectural monuments in Estonia - Karja St. Catherine's Church, Muhu St. Catherine's Church and Pöide St. Mary's Church - in Muhu and Saaremaa islands. All three churches are genetically related. We can see the grand old man of Estonian art history in the situation most characteristic to him - communicating and working with old buildings. Villem Raam vividly mediates the artwork of medieval construction masters, interprets symbols of medieval art and the world view of a medieval man. According to Raam, without knowing the background information it is difficult to appreciate the value of architectural monuments. The documentary expresses the idea that our responsibility is to preserve unique buildings for our future generations since the architectural monuments are an important part of the cultural heritage of Estonia and Europe.

Multicolored Fairies

Live now
A cinematic narrative about the lives of emotionally hurt children whose destinies have brought them to the school for students with special educational needs. Despite all difficulties, the children strive for goodness while searching for their own "self". Girls are open-mindedly telling their stories. These young people have already witnessed the darker side of life. Kaagvere school has a strict regimen - children are not allowed to leave the territory, school guards are armed. The boys are talking about how they got into Puiatu special school and the new bad habits that they acquired there. Their attitudes and destinies differ. The boys share their dreams, they sing and play the guitar. "Oh, Estonia" has a beautiful yet sad sound, just like expressing the spoilt lives of the boys.

Estonian Defence

Live now
In 1993, Estonian National Defence celebrates its 75th birthday. Soviet military forces have not left yet when the restoration of national defence has been founded. Various state and voluntary structures are looking for the right answers in forming defence policy. The director is intrigued by the national level of protection and the politicians' rights to decide for or instead of the nation how to protect the state (and nation). These problems have always been vital for Estonia. The prequel of the documentary introduces a long excursion to history - from the War of Independence to the year of 1940, while observing the development of Estonian national defence and its collapse.

Ice Kingdom

Live now
The documentary depicts Antarctica as an aesthetic phenomenon - it is a land of eternal silence and stillness; during its short summer the continent reveals its most beautiful treasures. Long shots about fairytale-like ice dunes, extremely subtle reflections of light and joyfully lively natural environment create an enjoyable nature documentary free from excessive popular scientific ballast. The documentary has been filmed during the 13th Soviet Antarctic expedition from November 1968 until May 1969.

Year of the Horse

Live now
Film-reportage describes the most vital moments in Estonian struggle for independence in 1990, also some typical episodes of everyday life of Estonian people, that altogether should give a concentrated picture about Estonia this year. The documentary is a continuation for the director's former film chronicle "Year of Dragon" (1988).

Midsummer's Day

Live now
Midsummer's Day tells a story about the celebration of Estonia's most important holidays in urban conditions. The film, recorded with a hidden camera, vividly depicts the change in the traditional content of Midsummer's Day.

Year of the Dragon

Live now
1988 was an exceptional year in Estonia. As a surprise to everyone, use of the national flag and insignia was permitted, an open rift developed the party and government leaders, the Popular Front and Green movements developed, but so, too, the Interfront – communist hardliners opposed to Estonian Independence. Estonian Heritage Protection Society helped restore War of Independence monuments, Stalin’s attempt to destroy the Estonian people was revealed and – just imagine – Estonian deputies in Moscow stood up against the central authorities. The developments in Estonia drew international attention. Could all this really be happening in a totalitarian country? The documentary is a compelling account of the events in Estonia in the year of Dragon, 1988, the changes in the lives (albeit superficial ones in the beginning) and the resurgence of Estonian national pride after 48 years of dormancy.

511 Best Photographs of Mars

Live now
The film introduces a selection of various guest types in cafes and night clubs in late 1960s when old ladies still had some bourgeois manners from the first republic of Estonia and the youngsters of the Soviet regime were not served in a restaurant if they had no proper clothing. The guests of Tallinn's legendary cafes "Pearl" and "Moscow" were filmed in their own time. The uniqueness of the film is expressed through a strangely independent soundtrack that observes everyday bustle from the heights of melancholy poetry and remote uranography. Artur Alliksaar's poetry is read by Aarne Üksküla.
